Start up wednesday 1: Business, do you have what it takes?

This past wednesday i attended a Start up Wednesday session, where we discussed what we would need to start a business. Keith Evans from CIDA gave the talk. He started off by bigging up creative students which was nice, suggesting we had good skills with strategic planning, conceptual thinking, project management and so on, all of which are good for starting your own business.

We then talked about some of the key things businesses need, these were; a mission, a vision, and values. For our mission we were just given a piece of paper, and some examples of larger companies visions. In the end I decided my mission would be; "To make new realities people want to explore." because that's what i want to produce in my animations. The vision was supposed to be a much larger idea, almost like an end goal, or the perfect scenario. My vision was; "To be the best digital storyteller." I read this aloud to the group and Keith thought it was good, but that it needed something. And finally for the values we were to choose 5 key values we thought were the most important, and then we whittled it down to three. My three where conscientiousness, honesty and honour.

After the session i felt a lot more like i had the skills to be an entrepreneur and start up my own business, and it also gave my professional confidence a boost, which i very much needed. Coming up with a vision and a mission was very useful too, especially to help decide what i want to specialise in for my career.

The next session is about having ideas for business which i will hopefully get the chance to attend.
